The Cyber Security Expert Association Ghana has issued an advisory to the public regarding the projected increase in cyber-attacks in 2023.
The Association said as the nature of cyber threats continues to evolve, it is of paramount importance that individuals, institutions, and organizations stay informed and take necessary measures to protect themselves.
In light of this, the Association has conducted a thorough analysis of current cybercrime trends and has identified the following potential risks for the year 2023:
Social engineering is likely to increase with more sophisticated techniques being used to manipulate individuals, it said in a statement.
This may involve tricking individuals or institutions into divulging sensitive information or performing actions that compromise their security. often through emails, instant messaging apps, and other social media handle.
There may be an increase in extortion attempts using aggressive tactics targeting mobile money users.
An increase in cyber-attacks on financial institutions is projected to occur in Ghana.
Human error is predicted to continue to be a major factor in cyber security threats for 2023. People may accidentally download malware or click on links leading to malicious websites, or neglect to follow proper security protocols such as using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication.
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity is expected to continue to evolve and present new risks in 2023. AI algorithms could be used to automate and scale cyber-attacks, making it easier for attackers to launch more sophisticated and targeted attacks.
To combat these threats, the Cyber Security Expert Association Ghana urges Ghanaians to remain vigilant and cautious when using the internet and sharing personal information online.
“We also encourage everyone to educate themselves about cyber threats and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families,” the statement said.
Additionally, all institutions using digital infrastructure should prioritize cybersecurity and take necessary steps to protect themselves and their users by implementing cybersecurity policies and yearly refresher training.
“We commend the work done by the cyber security authority in 2022 and recommend that citizens utilize the authority’s incident response center by reporting all cyberrelated attacks. The Cyber Security Expert Association Ghana is committed to helping the public stay safe online,” it further said.
